Lexington Opera House

This historic opera house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1886 and opened to the public in 1887. This magnificent opera house features many luxurious details including, red velvet curtains, hand-carved walnut door frames and a French crystal chandelier. It's an easy drive from Georgetown.
This opulent theatre was one of the country's most well-designed and well-equipped theaters of its time. Notable theatre performers, including Ethel Barrymore, George M. Cohan, W.C. Fields and Will Rogers performed on stage through 1926, the date of the last live performance. Once the live performances were done, the theatre began playing movies. While in downtown Lexington, make your way to the Lexington Center for an enjoyable day of ballet, music, a broadway theatre production or family show at this historic eastern Kentucky landmark.
