Visiting Eastern Kentucky

The Bluegrass State’s eastern reaches shine brightest in the summer. Adventures aren’t hard to find in the regions countless parks and outdoor destinations, and communities from Ashland and Louisa to Campbellsville and Columbia see local event calendars fill with more special events, sports, festivals, and family-friendly fun than any other time of year.

As summer illuminates eastern Kentucky’s lush and diverse landscape, there’s no better way to get out and explore than by packing up the car taking a scenic driving tour. Places like Daniel Boone National Forest make compelling destinations, and towns like Somerset and Corbin offer their own charming brands of Americana along the way.

Of course, there is another way to see the countryside – Bluegrass Scenic Railroad Train Excursions reveal to visitors the hidden hills and horse farms and trails the highways don’t traverse. Embark on the 90-minute, 11-mile Bluegrass Scenic Railroad Train Excursion, held each Saturday and Sunday, now through October 30th.

Bikers roll into Ironton, just across the river from Ashland, on the second weekend in August. The 2016 Rally on the River is draws riders from all over the country with weekend of music, food, entertainment, and and bike shows throughout Ironton’s downtown area. Stay in Ashland to save on sleeping arrangements.

That same weekend, Corbin has a party of its own. From August 10th through 13th, the 2016 NIBROC Festival fills Depot Street with midway rides and games, specialty item vendors, live music, entertainment, an array of local food offerings, and more. Don’t miss your chance to treat your family to this annual favorite.

September 2nd through 4th, families can be a part of a longstanding annual tradition in Winchester. The 38th Annual Daniel Boone Pioneer Festival is set to include all kinds of arts and crafts, food, a 5K, live entertainment, and more. The festivities are spread all across Winchester, with start times vary by day and activity. Check the schedule during your visit for individual event times.
