Visiting Eastern Kentucky

Eastern Kentucky from Ashland in the north, near the West Virginia state line, south to Barbourville, near the Tennessee border, autumn colors are blazing and winter weather is around the corner. This is the Appalachian Mountain region of Kentucky with the rugged terrain of the East Kentucky coal field. Beautiful state recreations parks include Carr Creek near Sassafras, Pikeville's Fishtrap Lake and Grayson Lake for water recreation and fishing. Kingdom Come State Recreation Park on Pine Mountain features dramatic rock formations, a small mountain lake and 14 mountain trails open year round for visitors. Pristine outdoors, charming and friendly small towns – Eastern Kentucky makes a delightful destination.

Thanksgiving weekend, Harlan, east of Barbourville, hosts the 2010 Festival of the Mountain Masters and Mountain Masters 16 Mile Trail Run. For over 20 years, Harlan County has celebrated its regional Appalachian art and culture at the festival. Master craftsmen gather to demonstrate their skills and showcase their products. Come watch weavers, broom makers, potters and blacksmiths work their trades. Live entertainment, a festival of food and a quilt contest are included in the fun and activities.

The 5th Annual Mountain Masters 16 Mile Trail Run is November 27th, 2010. The trail run is a beautiful course through amazing mountain top scenery on Pine Mountain, along Little Shepard Trail. The point to point race finishes in Kingdom Come State Park with transportation back to the Village Center and Mountain Masters Festival. The Best Western Wilderness Trail Inn in Barbourville is conveniently located just 30 miles away from Harlan. Enjoy a wonderful fall weekend in the rolling hills of Kentucky at the Best Western Wilderness Trail Inn.

Kentucky's charming northeastern town of Ashland is a wonderful spot to visit during the holidays. The town hosts the 2010 Winter Wonderland of Lights Festival during November and December. The Official opening night is November 15th; however, Miss Winter Wonderland 2010 will be crowned at the Beauty Pageant November 6th. Festival events include the annual Christmas Parade the evening of November 23rd, pictures with Santa are weekends at the Central Park Log House, train rides and the light displays run through January 1, 2011.

Ashland's 2010 holiday theme is Bright Lights and Christmas Dreams – a wonderful place to visit and get into the spirit of the season. Bring the kids to marvel at 50 light displays set among the 52-acre park and don't miss a ride on the Winter Wonderland Express Train. Ashland is the ideal place to create holiday memories. The Best Western River Cities in Ashland is ready with comfortable accommodations, a complimentary hot breakfast each morning, and reasonable rates – perfect for a holiday season getaway.
