Lexington, Kentucky's second largest city is the center of eastern Kentucky. Frankfort, the state capital is just forty five minutes west. Both are in the heart of Kentucky bluegrass horse country lined with miles of white Kentucky board fence. Horse farms set in the verdant green Kentucky bluegrass is perhaps the most well recognized sight in eastern Kentucky, but the region offers visitors much more. The Appalachian Mountains on the eastern border form a magnificent backdrop to miles of unspoiled forests and lakes filled with wildlife and adventures waiting to happen. From Cumberland Falls in the south to Blue Licks Battleground State Resort Park in the north, outdoor recreation opportunities abound.
Cumberland Falls creates a phenomenon unique in the western hemisphere, known as a moonbow – where a rainbow is visible on full moon evening. The city of Corbin, south on I75, hosts Moonbow Days and Nights in June. Merchants in Corbin stay open late on the full moon night and have outdoor sales, along with live music and entertainment. This makes for a nice weekend of shopping and outdoor activity at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. The moonbow actually occurs a couple of days before and after the full moon, so you can stay awhile and still see it.
Not to be outdone by the Kentucky Derby, Barbourville is the site of the annual Ken-Ducky Derby. A fun family event on June 5th, the day includes a rubber ducky race at the Barbourville Water Park. The festivities also include food booths, kid's games and activities, music and other entertainment for all ages. The Best Western Wilderness Trail Inn is a great home away from home for visitors in the area. The Best Western Corbin Inn is also nearby, making it convenient to see the moonbow at Cumberland Falls as well.
Northeastern Kentucky offers equally enticing events and sights during spring and summer. Georgetown, just north of Lexington, hosts the Georgetown International Kite and Culture Festival in April. Downtown Georgetown becomes a non-stop cultural entertainment venue, featuring kite competitions, classes and entertainment for the entire family. Danville, south of Lexington, hosts the 20th annual Great American Brass Band Festival June 10th – 13th. Both great family events and Best Western Hotels in both cities are ready to welcome you and your family.
No visit to northern Kentucky is complete without a visit to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The Park features museum exhibits, shows, entertainment and special events many showcasing horses. The Kentucky High School Invitational Rodeo at the end of May brings the best high school rodeo athletes together for a three day competition. See the most talented up and coming cowboys in the region compete for top rodeo honors. The Horse Park June schedule includes the 37th Annual Festival of the Bluegrass. This is a showcase for the best Bluegrass bands in the state, and also features top national performers. Music lovers, this is not to be missed.
