Travelers to the Greater Louisville area have plenty of reasons to celebrate. Not only is the Louisville area beautiful with its rolling hills, the area is home of many fine distilleries. Maker's Mark Distillery is one of them. T. William "Bill" Samuels Sr. established Maker's Mark in 1954, after he purchased the "Burks' Distillery", in Loretto. The first distinguishable square bottle of small-batch bourbon whiskey, with the red wax seal, was finished in 1958. It was Samuels Sr.'s wife Margie who thought of the whiskey's name, the label and had the idea for the red wax seal.
Maker's Mark is made with red winter wheat instead of rye and is aged in the warehouses for six to seven-and-a-half years, contributing to the full-flavored taste. In 1974, the National Register of Historic Places included the distillery in its listing. In 1980, the distillery became the first active distillery listed designated as a National Historic Landmark. After visiting the distillery, admire the surroundings on a short drive to Bardstown or Elizabethtown, where comfortable accommodations await with Best Western hotels.
