Bowman Field

Bowman Field

Air travelers land at Bowman Field.

Southeastern Louisville residents and visitors were able to enjoy commercial air travel, since the 1920s and 1930s. Bowman Field was developed in 1921 by Abram H. Bowman and is North America's oldest operating airfield. The airfield was the operating base for the 465th Pursuit Squadron Reserves in 1922. In 1927, approximately 10,000 people watched Charles Lindbergh land the Spirit of St. Louis airplane at the airfield. Today, it's a top attraction in the Louisville area.

This 426-acre airport southeast of downtown Louisville, was the first commercial airfield in the state. Trans World Airlines, Continental Airlines and Eastern Air Lines were the first commercial airlines to offer flights at the airfield. Commercial flights continued until Standiford Field, now named Louisville International Airport, opened for business in 1947. The airport continues to serve as a backup for Louisville International Airport.
