Most Popular Area Attractions

Bluegrass Heritage Museum

Make the most of your next stay in Kentucky by exploring the very impressive Bluegrass Heritage Museum. Found in Winchester, not far east of Lexington in eastern Kentucky, the Bluegrass Heritage Museum highlights a wide range of historical eras and figures from the area and the state.

As you explore the Bluegrass Heritage Museum, be sure to check out artifacts from the old Pioneer Telephone Museum, or peruse the Bluegrass Heritage Bookstore. Don't pass on a chance to see the Quilt Room, the Guerrant Room, or the Agriculture Room.

Historic Downtown Winchester

You'll discover a wide range of things to see and do during your next visit to Winchester – one of eastern Kentucky's premier cities. You'll find Winchester just east of Lexington along Interstate 64. As you plan your exploration of Winchester, be sure to include an afternoon spent touring Historic Downtown Winchester

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, Historic Downtown Winchester features an array of must-see destinations. Don't miss the Bluegrass Heritage Museum or the Clark Mansion. There are many ways to experience a true taste of eastern Kentucky – Historic Downtown Winchester just so happens to be one of the best.

Natural Bridge State Park

Bluegrass State travelers ready for a fun day of exploring, have a wonderful option in eastern Kentucky. Travel southeast of Winchester, to find the beautiful 2,369-acre Natural Bridge State Park. This magnificent park was established in 1926 as one of the first of four original state parks. The namesake Pottsville conglomeratic sandstone Natural Bridge arch, stands 65 feet high by 20 feet wide, spanning 78 feet long. Geologists believe this incredible natural wonder has stood for over a million years.

Plan to spend at least a full day exploring the park, including the park's 1,188-acre nature preserve, established by the Kentucky Nature Preserves Commission. Choose one or more of the ten trails leading to the Natural Bridge, for a fun day of hiking.

For a relaxing journey to the top of Natural Bridge, enjoy a ride in the Sky Lift. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the breath-taking view from Lookout Point. Bring along your fishing pole or borrow one from the park, for fishing fun at Mill Creek Lake. Try your best at catching a bluegill, black crappie, rainbow trout, black bullhead or channel catfish. Canoeing, kayaking and pedal boating are also fun ways to spend time on the lake.

Rupp Arena

If Kentucky is known around the world for anything, it's a safe bet you'd be talking about bourbon. Then again, it could also be known for its horse racing. One could also argue Kentucky bluegrass is just as popular. But for the sporting type, there's no question – Kentucky is all about college basketball.

In Lexington, check out the Rupp Arena, home of the University of Kentucky men's and women's basketball teams. Opened in 1976 in Lexington, Rupp Arena seats more than 23,500 fans come Wildcats game day. Rupp Arena is also the focal point of Lexington Center, a shopping and convention center.

The Red Mile

Among the wide range of endeavors Kentucky is known for, horses and horse racing are near the top. In Lexington, The Red Mile is one of the state's premier horse racing venues – with a twist. The Red Mile hosts harness racing, where horses pull a two-wheeled cart and it's driver, rather than atop its back.

The Red Mile, found near downtown Lexington along Versailles Road, was opened in 1875. Like its name states, The Red Mile is truly one mile is length, and its surface is red clay. Each year during the fall, dates vary, The Red Miles hosts the Kentucky Futurity, one leg of the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Trotters.
