The Kentucky Derby is run the first Saturday in May, the 2010 136th Kentucky Derby is May 1st. The Thunder Over Louisville, April 17th, launches the official Kentucky Derby Festival. A full days worth of activities kick off spring with the 2010 theme “ Spring Fever Reliever”. Daytime activities include interactive displays, kids activities, and the Thunder Foodfest. Afternoon brings airshows, and the evening concludes with a fireworks spectacular that is unmatched in North America. Set on the Ohio River on and around both sides of the beautiful George Rodgers Clark Memorial Bridge, the show is nearly a half hour pyrotechnic extravaganza synchronized to music. The Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon and miniMarathon (half Marathon) will be held Saturday April 24th. A Boston Marathon Qualifier and events include corporate and open team challenges. Runners and fans travel from across the US and many international locations to participate in this scenic race ending in downtown Louisville.
Kentucky runners and neighbors can test their winter training earlier in April at the Goose Creek 5K. This is the first of four races in the 6th Annual Kentucky State Park Race Series. The Goose Creek 5K is April 10th at the E P Tom Sawyer State Park. All runners are welcome, including all ages and abilities. This is a family event and everyone interested in walking or running is encouraged to participate. The subsequent races will be held mid-month in May, June and July at other Kentucky State Parks. Take the challenge and set your goals to complete all four – a great motivation to keep up summer training.
